Historic Moment: Robert Prevost Becomes First American Pope, Takes Name Leo XIV

In a groundbreaking development for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th pope, marking the first time an American has ascended to the papacy. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV.

A Journey from Chicago to the Vatican

Born in Chicago in 1955 to immigrant parents, Robert Prevost began his religious vocation as an altar boy. He joined the Order of St. Augustine in 1978 and was ordained a priest in 1982. His missionary work took him to Peru, where he served for several decades, eventually becoming the Archbishop of Chiclayo. In 2015, he became a naturalized Peruvian citizen, reflecting his deep ties to the country. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a significant role within the Vatican hierarchy.

Election and Papal Name

The papal conclave convened on May 7, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis on April 21. After four ballots over two days, the College of Cardinals elected Prevost as the new pope. He chose the name Leo XIV, a nod to Pope Leo XIII, known for his advocacy of social justice and workers’ rights.

Vision for the Church

Pope Leo XIV is perceived as a progressive yet measured leader. He aligns with Pope Francis’s emphasis on social justice, environmental stewardship, and outreach to marginalized communities. In his first address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, he greeted the crowd with “Peace be with all of you!” and emphasized unity and compassion.

Global Reactions

The election of an American pope has elicited a range of reactions. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his approval, calling it a significant honor for the United States. However, some observers note potential tensions, given Pope Leo XIV’s past criticisms of certain U.S. policies, particularly on immigration.

Significance of the Election

Pope Leo XIV’s election breaks long standing conventions, as the papacy has traditionally been held by Europeans. His diverse background and international experience symbolize a more global and inclusive direction for the Catholic Church, resonating with its 1.4 billion followers worldwide.
