Historic Enugu City Marathon Kicks Off Today with Millions in Prize Money

The Coal City of Enugu is alive with energy and anticipation today as it proudly hosts the first-ever Enugu City International Marathon, a landmark event set to place southeastern Nigeria on the global athletics map. Organized by Nilayo Sports Management, the race has drawn international acclaim, attracting over 100 elite athletes from around the world.

Adding to the excitement, elite marathoners from world-renowned running nations — Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Eritrea are already in Enugu for this much-anticipated event. Their participation adds prestige and global visibility to the race, aligning it with top-tier marathons across Africa and beyond.

The event features a 42-kilometre full marathon, certified by World Athletics, and includes both international and local elite categories, along with a 10-kilometre fun race. Runners will traverse a scenic, professionally mapped route that showcases the beauty, culture, and spirit of Enugu.

Governor Peter Mbah highlighted the significance of the race:

“We want to use this marathon to tell our story and showcase Enugu as a top destination for tourism, commerce, and global sporting events.”

10K Runners (Men & Women)

  • 1st Place: ₦1,000,000
