Guard at Emir of Yauri’s Orchard Killed by Hippopotamus in Kebbi State

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday, September 22, 2024, when a guard at the Emir of Yauri’s orchard, Malam Usman Maigadi, was killed by a hippopotamus in Kebbi State. The attack took place near Yauri River in Tillo Village, Yauri Local Government Area (LGA).

The Attack

Maigadi, a 60-year-old guard, was fishing at the Yauri River when he was attacked by a mother hippopotamus believed to be protecting her calf. Reports suggest that the animal may have felt threatened and attacked in self-defense, possibly perceiving Maigadi’s presence as a danger to her young.

Local Authorities and Government Confirm the Incident

The Chairman of Yauri LGA, Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu, confirmed the incident and announced that Maigadi had been buried according to Islamic rites in Yauri. The Kebbi State Government also expressed its condolences.

Governor’s Condolences

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, through his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, extended his heartfelt condolences to the Yauri Emirate and the family of the deceased. The governor prayed for Maigadi’s soul, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him a place in Jannatul Firdaus.

A Tragic Reminder of Human-Wildlife Conflicts

The incident highlights the risks posed by wildlife in regions where humans and animals share close proximity. While hippopotamuses are typically non-aggressive, they can become extremely dangerous when they feel their young are at risk.
