Social media behemoth X, formerly recognized as Twitter, encountered a widespread global outage that lasted a little over an hour on Thursday, causing disruptions for thousands of users worldwide. The hashtag #TwitterDown swiftly gained traction as frustrated users shared their experiences across various social media platforms. Downdetector.com, a service monitoring online service outages, reported challenges for more than 47,000 users in the United States attempting to access both X and X Pro.
The impact of the outage extended beyond the United States, with users in the UK and Asia also reporting issues, expressing their inability to view posts on the platform. A simple “Welcome to X!” message greeted users attempting to access the site during this period.
Despite the significant disruption, access to the platform was swiftly restored, and users regained functionality after just over an hour of downtime.
Elon Musk, the entrepreneur who acquired Twitter for $44 billion last year, has not yet issued an official statement regarding the outage. Musk’s management of X has faced heightened scrutiny, encompassing challenges such as a decline in advertising revenue and accusations of hosting antisemitic content. In response to these allegations, the company filed a lawsuit against Media Matters for America, a left-leaning pressure group that made the accusations.
This brief yet widespread outage adds to the recent challenges faced by X, emphasizing the platform’s pivotal role in global online communication. The company’s response and any potential long-term implications of the outage remain to be seen.
Thousands of users on social media platform X, owned by entrepreneur Elon Musk, reported disruptions and difficulties accessing posts globally. Formerly known as Twitter, the platform experienced service outages that began spiking around 06:00 GMT on Thursday, according to the outage tracking website Downdetector.
At the peak of the outage, about 95,000 users globally experienced problems, with over 77,000 users in the United States facing issues. Users in Canada, Britain, France, and other countries also reported difficulties accessing both X and X Pro, previously known as TweetDeck.
During the outage, users took to rival platforms, including Meta’s app Threads, to voice their frustrations. Many complained about blank timelines on X, being unable to post or view new content, and being unable to send direct messages through the site, which only displayed a message saying, “Welcome to X!”
The cause of the outage, lasting about 45 minutes, remains unknown. Elon Musk, who acquired the company in a $44 billion deal last year, has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. The recent outage further highlights the challenges faced by X under Musk’s management, including controversies around content moderation and allegations of spreading disinformation. The platform’s significance in global online communication is underscored by the widespread impact of the brief but disruptive outage.
