Favour Ofili Makes History: Breaks Women’s 150m World Record in Atlanta

In a breathtaking display of speed and determination, 22-year-old Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili shattered the women’s 150-meter world record at the Adidas Atlanta City Games. Clocking an astonishing 15.85 seconds, she became the first woman ever to run the distance in under 16 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 16.23 seconds set by Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018.

The Race That Changed Everything

Held on May 17, 2025, at Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, the Adidas Atlanta City Games featured a unique straight-track format. Ofili’s performance was not only a personal triumph but also a significant milestone in women’s athletics. She outpaced American sprinter Tamari Davis, who also broke the previous record with a time of 16.14 seconds.

From Port Harcourt to the World Stage

Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Favour Chukwuka Ofili has steadily risen through the ranks of international sprinting. A former student-athlete at Louisiana State University (LSU), she has represented Nigeria on multiple global platforms, including the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she finished sixth in the women’s 200m final.

Strategy and Execution

After her record-breaking run, Ofili shared insights into her approach: “Treat it like it’s a long 100m,” she said. “Drive more. The track is bouncy. Just let the track do the work.” Her focus and technique were evident as she powered through the finish line, making history in the process.

A New Era in Women’s Sprinting

The 150m event, though not commonly featured in major championships, serves as a bridge between the 100m and 200m sprints. Ofili’s groundbreaking time not only sets a new world record but also elevates the standards for future competitions in this distance. Her achievement underscores the depth of talent emerging from Africa and the global impact of Nigerian athletes.

Looking Ahead

With this historic performance, Favour Ofili has firmly established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of sprinting. As she continues to train and compete, fans and fellow athletes alike will be watching her journey with great anticipation, eager to see what she accomplishes next.
