Ex-Super Eagles Goalkeeper Joseph Dosu Survives Another Accident in Lagos

Former Nigerian football star and ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper, Joseph Dosu, has narrowly escaped death after a truck rammed into his car in the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos State. This near-fatal incident occurred as Dosu was waiting to refuel his vehicle, marking another chapter in a life already marked by tragedy and resilience.

The Incident in Lagos

Joseph Dosu shared the details of the accident via a Facebook post on October 4, 2024. According to his account, the incident happened at the Enyo filling station after the Ojodu Berger bus stop, where he and a friend were waiting to buy fuel.

A Mack truck, laden with iron and registered as LND 470 XX, veered off the road and crushed Dosu’s car. Fortunately, both he and his companion survived the crash. In his words:

“To God be the glory, another d@ath escape by grace and mercy of God… I and my friend SM were at Enyo filling station after Ojodu Berger bus stop to get fuel… when this Mack truck, fully loaded with iron, left the road and crushed my car.”

The incident has sparked an outpouring of relief from his fans and well-wishers, who continue to express their gratitude for his survival.

A Career Marked by Triumph and Tragedy

Joseph Dosu’s life has been a mix of triumph and tragedy. He rose to fame as the goalkeeper of Nigeria’s gold-winning football team during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where his standout performances cemented his position as one of Nigeria’s top-choice goalkeepers. His success on the global stage earned him a contract with Reggiana, a top Italian Serie A club, where he was poised for a long and successful career in football.

However, his promising career was cut short in 1997 when a devastating accident along Ikorodu Road in Lagos damaged his spinal cord, ending his time as a professional footballer prematurely.

Dosu recalled the life-changing accident:

“My career was short-lived because of the accident. It happened after we beat Guinea 3-0 to qualify for the 1998 World Cup in France. After the game, we went back to Sheraton, our hotel, and I prepared to visit my wife and children. I was with a friend, on Saturday, a policeman on my way home when I had the accident.”

The incident left Dosu fighting for his life as his car veered off the road, and he later found himself in Eko Hospital after being rescued by teammates who happened to pass by.

“Suddenly, everywhere went blank; all I could see were cows everywhere. As I tried to control the car, I veered off the road… I’m not okay. So we were waiting for help, and suddenly Taribo West’s car was passing by though he wasn’t inside. They saw us and rescued us and took us to Eko Hospital.”

The Road to Recovery

After the accident, Dosu underwent extensive treatment and rehabilitation. He reflected on his experience waking up in Plaster of Paris, and how his life changed in a split second. Despite the tragic end to his football career, Dosu has remained positive and active in Nigerian football, serving as a mentor and coach to younger players.

Gratitude for Life

Joseph Dosu’s most recent escape from death has again reminded him of the fragility of life. His survival is seen as nothing short of miraculous, and his story continues to inspire fans and aspiring athletes alike. Having survived two major accidents, Dosu’s resilience is a testament to his strength and unyielding spirit.

His experiences serve as a powerful reminder that life’s challenges can be overcome with faith, resilience, and a will to keep moving forward.
