EU Raises Schengen Visa Fees for African and Non-EU Citizens

The European Union (EU) has announced an increase in Schengen visa application fees for adult African and other non-EU citizens. The fee has been raised from €80 to €90, effective from June 11, 2024.

Implications for Applicants

According to the European Commission, all visa applications submitted on or after this date will be subject to the new fee. Additionally, children aged six to 12 years will now pay €45 each as an application fee.

 Rising Visa Applications

Recent data published by the EU reveals a significant surge in visa applications. In 2023, the consulates of EU countries and Schengen-associated nations received over 10.3 million applications for short-stay visas. This marks a substantial 37% increase compared to 2022 figures but remains lower than pre-pandemic levels in 2019, which saw 17 million applications.

Destination Europe

Europe continues to attract a considerable number of migrants, particularly Nigerian youths seeking better opportunities. Non-EU nationals require a Schengen visa for temporary visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period in the Schengen area.
