EU Launches First Probe Under Digital Services Act, Targeting Musk’s X (Formerly Twitter)

In a groundbreaking move, the European Union has initiated its first investigation under the Digital Services Act (DSA), focusing on social media giant X, formerly known as Twitter. The DSA, in effect since November last year, mandates increased responsibility for very large online platforms and search engines to combat illegal content and threats to public security. The probe follows EU industry chief Thierry Breton’s letters to X, Meta, TikTok, and Alphabet after Hamas’ attacks on Israel, reminding them of their DSA obligations.

X, which recently introduced its “Community Notes” feature for users to flag false content, is under scrutiny regarding the dissemination of illegal content in the EU. The European Commission will conduct an in-depth investigation, assessing the effectiveness of measures taken, including the community notes system. While X challenges any disinformation charges, the Commission will also examine the platform’s transparency efforts and potential deceptive design elements.
