The inaugural Enugu City International Marathon held today marked a historic moment for southeastern Nigeria, as over 100 elite athletes from across the globe including Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Eritrea gathered in Enugu for the world-class event.

The marathon, organized by Nilayo Sports Management and certified by World Athletics, featured a 42km full marathon and a 10km fun race.

Participants raced through a scenic and professionally mapped route that highlighted Enugu’s natural beauty and vibrant culture.

A major highlight of the event was Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, proudly crossing the finish line, symbolizing the government’s dedication to promoting health, unity, tourism, and international sports.

With millions in prize money up for grabs, ranging from $15,000 for top international finishers to 3 Million Naira for Nigerian winners, the event attracted intense competition.

The atmosphere was festive, with crowds cheering and Nigerian music star Kcee performing live at the finish line. The marathon is seen as a significant stepping stone as Enugu prepares to host the 23rd National Sports Festival in 2026, reinforcing its reputation as a premier destination for major athletic events in Nigeria and Africa.
