#EndBadGovernance Organisers Call for October 1 Protest, Seek Police Security

The organizers of the #EndBadGovernance movement has officially announced plans to hold a protest on October 1, 2024. The protest is aimed at opposing the “anti-poor policies” of the current government, which they argue have worsened the economic conditions in Nigeria. In preparation for the demonstration, the organizers have written to the Nigerian Police, requesting adequate security to ensure a peaceful protest.

Focus on Anti-Poor Policies

The primary objective of the October 1 protest is to express dissatisfaction with the economic policies implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. These policies, according to the organizers, have led to increased hardship for ordinary Nigerians. Fuel price hikes, inflation, and other economic challenges have deepened poverty, and the protest aims to bring attention to these issues.

Request for Police Protection

In a joint statement signed by several advocacy groups, the protest organizers called on the Nigerian Police to provide security for demonstrators. Groups such as the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC), Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), Joint Action Front (JAF), and Pan-African Consciousness Renaissance (PACOR-Nigeria) are among those backing the protest. The statement was directed to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, invoking Section 83 (4) of the Police Establishment Act 2020, which mandates police protection for public gatherings.

Hassan Soweto Urges Participation

Hassan Soweto, the National Coordinator of the ERC, urged Nigerians to come out in large numbers to participate in the peaceful protest. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a non-violent approach and reiterated the need for police protection to prevent any disruptions or violence during the protest.

Protest Details and Goals

The protest will kick off in Lagos at 7:30 a.m. under the Ikeja Bridge, with participants marching through the streets. The organizers stated that this action serves as a warning to the government, demanding immediate attention to their grievances. If their demands are ignored, they threaten further protests.

Unmet Demands from Previous Protests

The organizers highlighted that their demands from earlier protests, including the “ten days of rage” in August, remain unmet. They criticized President Tinubu for lavish government spending, including the purchase of luxury cars and aircraft, while neglecting the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

Impact of Rising Fuel Prices

One of the key issues driving the protest is the recent hike in fuel prices, which organizers argue has pushed many Nigerians into deeper poverty. The price of fuel now ranges between N900 and N1,900 per liter depending on the region. This has led to higher food prices and worsened inflation, rendering the new National Minimum Wage of N70,000 ineffective.

Economic Challenges and Job Losses

The organizers also pointed to the closure of several multinational companies in Nigeria due to the harsh economic climate, which has led to widespread job losses. Traders and small business owners are also feeling the impact, as the rising costs of goods have left many struggling to sell their products.

October 1 Declared “National Day of Survival”

In response to the growing economic hardship, the organizers have declared October 1st as a “National Day of Survival.” They are calling on workers, students, youth, traders, the unemployed, and the poor to join the protest in a show of solidarity against the policies of the Tinubu administration, which they argue are driven by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.

Call for Release of Detained Protesters

In addition to their economic demands, the protest organizers are calling for the release of all #EndSARS and #EndBadGovernance protesters who are still in police custody. They are also advocating for the release of journalists, whistleblowers, activists, and others who have been detained by the state for speaking out against government policies.
