Elon Musk’s X Faces Setback as Court Rejects Challenge to California’s Content Moderation Law

Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter, faced a setback in its legal battle against California’s content moderation law. The law, requiring social media companies to disclose their content moderation practices, was challenged by X, claiming a violation of free speech rights. However, U.S. District Judge William Shubb dismissed X’s request, stating that the reporting requirement is not unjustified within the context of the First Amendment. The law mandates companies to provide semiannual reports on objectionable posts and their handling. X, under Musk’s leadership, has experienced a decline in U.S. ad revenue amid controversies over content moderation. The platform is also under investigation in Europe for potential breaches of obligations. The case is X Corp v Bonta in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California.
