The Imo State Police Command has apprehended eight individuals in connection with a series of arson attacks on the National Open University (NOUN) campus and the residence of former Senator Frank Ibezim. The arrests were made following investigations into the destruction that occurred on September 30, 2024, at around 9:00 PM.
Arson Attacks on NOUN Campus and Ex-Senator’s Residence
The attacks targeted the National Open University (NOUN) located in Ezeoke Nsu, Ehime Mbano, and also partially destroyed the home of Frank Ibezim, a former Senator who represented Okigwe South. These acts of arson took place just days after Ibezim was accused of facilitating the establishment of an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at the university campus, sparking local outrage.
Community Protests Over Rumored IDP Camp
Residents of the Nsu community had expressed anger over rumors that the NOUN campus was being used to accommodate displaced persons from Northern Nigeria. The alleged move had fueled local protests, although Ibezim has denied the claims. According to the former Senator, the facility was intended for skills training programs for vulnerable youth in the South East, not for hosting IDPs, refugees, or migrants.
Senator Ibezim Denies Involvement in IDP Camp Plan
In response to the allegations, Ibezim released a statement firmly denying any plans to settle IDPs at the university campus. He emphasized that the rumors were categorically false, stating, “I will never be part of such a plan. The plan is for skills training for our vulnerable young people from the South East.”
Police Investigations and Arrests
Following the attacks, the Imo State Police Command launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of eight suspects. According to the police spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, the suspects were linked to the arson incidents, and the investigation is ongoing. Further arrests are anticipated as authorities continue their inquiry into the attacks.
