EFCC Receives 14,000 Petitions in One Year

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that the Commission received 14,000 petitions from the public over the past year. Olukoyede disclosed this during a courtesy visit by Dr. Charles Omini, the Special Envoy for West Africa, at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Commitment to Good Governance

Mr. Olukoyede emphasized the EFCC’s dedication to eradicating economic and financial crimes in Nigeria. He stated, “What we are doing is about this country; there is nothing personal in it. We are passionate about giving Nigerians a taste of good governance for once in their lifetime.” He highlighted that the Commission’s efforts are focused on ensuring that resources are managed responsibly and that corruption is curtailed.

Abundant Natural Resources

The EFCC Chairman pointed out Nigeria’s vast natural and mineral resources, asserting that proper management and accountability could significantly enhance the nation’s prosperity. “There is nowhere in Nigeria that you dig, and you won’t see natural resources or mineral resources. The forest alone can make us in the class of advanced countries. There is no region in Nigeria that does not have tourist attractions,” Olukoyede remarked.

 Winning the Fight Against Corruption

Olukoyede expressed optimism about the possibility of winning the fight against corruption if all Nigerians join forces. He referenced other countries like Singapore and Hong Kong, which have successfully overcome worse corruption challenges. “If all of us can come together, we will overwhelm them,” he stated, urging a collective effort to combat corruption.

Call for Public Awareness and Collaboration

The EFCC Chairman stressed the importance of raising public awareness about the detrimental effects of corruption on good governance. He urged Dr. Omini to help make Nigerians realize that corruption robs them of their rights to a better life. “Let people know that their rights have been violated; it is not about EFCC, it is about every one of us. Let us collaborate more,” he said.

 Envoy’s Appreciation and Support

Dr. Charles Omini commended the EFCC for its significant efforts in reducing corruption in Nigeria. He assured Olukoyede of his team’s commitment to supporting the anti-corruption crusade. “We have seen the level of impact. Our strategic and technical team will partner with you to take this crusade to every Nigerian and beyond,” Omini stated.

Protecting EFCC’s Rights

Omini also emphasized the importance of defending the rights of EFCC officers. “Part of our collaboration that brought us here today is to make sure we stand with you at all levels, that your rights and the rights of your officers and men are defended,” he said. The visit concluded with the presentation of an award to Mr. Olukoyede, acknowledging his efforts in the fight against corruption.
