Edo State Police Arrest Suspected Kidnapper Ibrahim Yahaya Jolly for Abduction of Community Leader

The Edo State Police Command has successfully apprehended a suspected kidnapper, Ibrahim Yahaya Jolly, for his involvement in the abduction of Igbinosun Evans, the leader of the Ugbogui community in Ovia South-East Local Government Area. The arrest highlights the ongoing efforts of the Edo State Police to combat kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state.

Arrest of Suspect Following Ransom Payment

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Edo State Command, SP Moses Joel Yamu, disclosed the details of the arrest on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, while parading five suspects involved in various crimes across the state. According to Yamu, the abduction took place on July 9, 2024, at around 9:30 a.m., when Igbinosun Evans was kidnapped. The family of the victim was subsequently forced to pay a ransom of seven million naira (₦7,000,000) to secure his release.

Yamu explained that the swift actions of the Police Command, particularly through the efforts of the Command’s Intelligence Rapid Response Squad (CIRRS), led to the arrest of the 27-year-old suspect, Ibrahim Yahaya Jolly. The CIRRS operatives tracked the suspect following the ransom payment, successfully apprehending him.

Confession and Cooperation with the Police

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to his involvement in the crime. He is reportedly cooperating with the police to help track down other members of the kidnapping syndicate who are still at large. The investigation is ongoing, with the authorities working to recover the arms used by the criminal gang and to bring the remaining culprits to justice.

Commissioner of Police Appeals for Public Support

The Commissioner of Police for Edo State, who expressed his gratitude to the people of the state for their support, called for continued cooperation between the police and the public. He emphasized that the fight against crime requires a collective effort and urged the citizens of Edo State to provide timely and valuable information to law enforcement agencies.

“There will be no room for criminals or criminality in the state,” the Commissioner declared. “They should move elsewhere or the long arm of the law will catch up with them.”

This arrest is one of several ongoing initiatives by the Edo State Police Command to rid the state of criminal elements. The Command has been actively pursuing kidnappers, armed robbers, and other criminal gangs to ensure that peace and security are maintained across the state.

Growing Concern Over Kidnapping in Edo State

Kidnapping has been a significant concern in Edo State and other parts of Nigeria, with criminal groups targeting both high-profile individuals and ordinary citizens for ransom. The arrest of Ibrahim Yahaya Jolly and the dismantling of his gang represents a small but crucial victory in the fight against this dangerous trend.

The police have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of Edo residents and have called on community leaders, local groups, and residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and collaborate with the security agencies to ensure the state remains safe.

Conclusion

The arrest of Ibrahim Yahaya Jolly marks another step forward in Edo State’s fight against kidnapping and criminality. With the suspect cooperating with the authorities, there is hope that more arrests will follow and that the state’s law enforcement agencies will continue to make significant progress in curbing the activities of criminal elements. As the police continue their investigations, the Edo State government and the public must remain unified in their efforts to protect the peace and security of the region.
