Edo Residents Burn Police Station Over Kidnap and Killing Despite Ransom Payment

A tragic incident in Agenebode, Edo State, has led to violent protests, resulting in the destruction of a police station. The unrest was triggered by the kidnap and killing of a young man, despite his family paying a ransom. This incident has stirred deep emotions within the community and raised questions about the role of local authorities.

The Catalyst: Kidnap and Murder

The unrest began after a young man was reportedly kidnapped in Agenebode, the headquarters of Etsako East Local Government Area in Edo State. Despite the payment of a ransom, the victim was not released. Days later, the community discovered that the young man had been murdered. This revelation deeply angered residents, particularly the youth of the area.

A source revealed that the community’s frustrations were exacerbated by claims that Fulani herdsmen were involved in the kidnapping and killing of people for organ harvesting. It was further alleged that the police were protecting these criminal activities, fueling the tension in the town.

Arrest and Confession

In their quest for justice, local youths tracked the phone of the deceased and arrested the individual who was using it. The arrested suspect was handed over to the police, and investigations linked the suspect to the leader of the Fulani community in the area.

Dissatisfied with the police’s handling of the case, the enraged youths took matters into their own hands. They stormed the police station, forcibly took the suspect, and led him to the residence of the Fulani community leader. Under interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to multiple killings, revealing that many victims had been murdered and buried in shallow graves after their organs were harvested.

Discovery of Mass Graves

The situation escalated when the furious youths dug up the compound of the Fulani leader, where they discovered the decomposing body of the kidnapped young man, along with several other human bones believed to belong to previous victims. This horrifying discovery incited the crowd even further.

Attack on Police and Community Properties

Following the discovery, the youths burned down the house of the Fulani leader, who had fled with his family, as well as the business premises of other Hausa and Fulani youths. They then turned their anger towards the police station, setting it ablaze. Several vehicles inside the police station were also torched.

One of the protesting youths expressed the community’s outrage, stating, “Enough is enough. The police kill our children and still take money from us. These kidnappers collect millions in ransom, and yet they still kill our loved ones. This must stop.”

Police Response

In the aftermath of the violent protests, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 5, Arungwa Udo, and the Commissioner of Police, Nemi Edwin-Iwo, visited the scene to restore order and assess the situation. Authorities are working to calm the tensions, but the community remains shaken by the gruesome discovery and the perceived inaction of law enforcement.
