Edo Deputy Speaker Maria Oligbi-Edeko Resigns Amid PDP’s Minority Status

On Monday, May 19, 2025, Mrs. Maria Oligbi-Edeko, representing Esan North East II Constituency, voluntarily resigned as Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly. Her decision follows the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) loss of majority status in the 24-member legislature, a consequence of recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Oligbi-Edeko cited her commitment to justice, fairness, and equity for all constituencies as the primary reasons for her resignation.

Transition of Leadership

Following her resignation, the Assembly unanimously elected Mr. Osamwonyi Atu of the APC, representing Orhionmwon East, as the new Deputy Speaker. The transition was marked by a motion moved by Majority Leader Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC Esan West) and seconded by Minority Leader Charity Airobarueghian (PDP  Ovia North East I), ensuring that all entitlements due to the office of the Deputy Speaker were accorded to Oligbi-Edeko.

Acknowledgment of Service

Lawmakers from both parties commended Oligbi-Edeko for her unwavering dedication, passion for public service, and high level of integrity throughout her tenure. Her resignation is seen as a rare display of integrity in politics, as she chose to step down rather than defect to the APC to retain her office perks.

Political Implications

The PDP’s current minority status in the Assembly, with 6 seats compared to the APC’s 18, has led to significant shifts in legislative dynamics. This development underscores the fluid nature of political affiliations and the impact of defections on the balance of power within state legislatures.
