EDO ASSEMBLY INITIATES IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS AGAINST DEPUTY GOVERNOR PHILIP SHAIBU

Latest Developments Unfold Amidst Ongoing Rift between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Shaibu

In a surprising turn of events, the Edo House of Assembly has officially commenced impeachment proceedings against the state Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu. The Majority leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian, revealed during plenary that the petition, dated March 5, was supported by 21 out of the 24 assembly members, surpassing the constitutional two-thirds requirement.

Impeachment Proceedings Unveiled

Aiguobarueghian explained that the impeachment petition against Deputy Governor Shaibu is grounded on two principal allegations: perjury and the disclosure of government secrets. This announcement adds another layer to the ongoing political drama in Edo State, further intensifying the rift between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, a discord that has been unfolding since Shaibu’s declaration of gubernatorial ambitions last year.

House Speaker Takes Action

Blessing Agbebaku, the speaker of the House, acknowledged the receipt of the petition and swiftly directed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to serve the impeachment notice to Shaibu. In a significant move, Agbebaku granted the deputy governor a seven-day window to respond to the allegations outlined in the impeachment notice.

The unfolding events raise questions about the stability of political alliances within Edo State and the potential impacts on governance and public trust.
