Deji Adeyanju Slams GTBank for Role in VDM Arrest, Says he is closing his account with the Bank!

Prominent Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has announced he is closing his Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) account in protest over the recent arrest of his client, social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). The move has stirred public attention and reignited conversations about the relationship between financial institutions, law enforcement, and citizen rights in Nigeria.

VeryDarkMan (VDM) , known for his outspoken activism online, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at a GTBank branch after he went there to raise concerns about alleged excessive and unauthorized deductions from his mother’s account.

According to reports, VDM had approached the bank to seek redress for the irregularities. However, the situation took an unexpected turn, ending with his arrest—a development that has left many Nigerians shocked and demanding answers.

In response to what he describes as an unjust arrest and a misuse of institutional power, Deji Adeyanju took to social media to announce that he is cutting ties with GTBank. He said the decision was his way of protesting what he sees as an abuse of both financial and legal systems to silence those who speak out.

Adeyanju stated that banks like GTBank must be held accountable, especially when their actions appear to contribute to unjust treatment or suppression of customers’ rights.

The incident has sparked widespread conversation online, with many Nigerians expressing support for VeryDarkMan and concern over how the situation was handled. Social media users have been vocal in criticising both the EFCC and GTBank, accusing them of using their power against everyday citizens.

This case has brought forward broader issues, especially about consumer protection, the transparency of banking operations, and the role of law enforcement in civil matters.

VDM’s legal team is expected to challenge the arrest, arguing that the EFCC’s involvement in what seems to be a customer-bank dispute is questionable. The situation also raises important questions about how Nigerian citizens can safely challenge institutions without fear of retaliation.

Deji Adeyanju’s decision to close his GTBank account may seem personal, but it sends a strong message about the need for accountability from both banks and law enforcement agencies. As the case unfolds, it could set a precedent for how similar situations are handled in the future, and how Nigerians choose to
