In a move to provide relief, the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, announced that the distribution of confiscated food items is scheduled to commence this Friday. Addressing the media in Lagos on Thursday, Adeniyi emphasized that the intention is to help those in need, and the distributed items are strictly not for resale.
Firm Warning Against Resale and Officer Involvement
Adeniyi issued a stern warning against the resale of the confiscated goods and made it clear that customs officers are barred from participating in the distribution. The specified rice packages, weighing 25kg each, will be available for purchase at N10,000.
NCS’s Plan for Direct Distribution
The National Customs Service (NCS) had previously revealed its initiative to directly distribute seized food items to Nigerians. National Public Relations Officer Abdullahi Maiwada shared this announcement in a statement on Tuesday.
Who Qualifies and Who Benefits?
Adeniyi outlined the eligibility criteria, indicating that individuals must provide a Nigerian Identification Number. The distribution targets various groups, including artisans, teachers, nurses, religious bodies, and other residents within operational areas.
Caution Against Profiteering and Exploitation
Expressing concern about potential profiteering, Adeniyi urged beneficiaries not to resell the items. He called on Nigerians to report any misuse or unauthorized resale of the confiscated food items. The customs department emphasized its commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability throughout the distribution process.
Decisive Measures for Violations
The Comptroller General asserted that the NCS would take decisive action against individuals or entities found violating the terms of the program. Adeniyi clarified that the distribution exercise is temporary, aiming to promptly dispose of the confiscated food items.
NCS’s Pledge to Food Security
Adeniyi highlighted the NCS’s commitment to protecting society by ensuring the availability of essential food items. He shed light on the economic challenges faced and expressed concern over the unsustainable trend of items flowing out massively to neighboring countries, which poses a threat to national food security.
