Corey Linsley Released by Chargers, Expected to Retire

In a significant move, the Los Angeles Chargers have released veteran center Corey Linsley, signaling the likely end of his impressive NFL career.

Diagnosis and Decision

Corey Linsley, 32, was diagnosed with a non-emergent heart issue after playing just three games last season. This led to his placement on the reserve/non-football injury list on September 30. In January, Linsley hinted that he was “99 percent” sure about retiring.

Remarkable Career Achievements

Linsley’s career has been nothing short of remarkable. Notably, he hasn’t allowed a sack since Week 10 of the 2020 season, maintaining an incredible streak of 1,572 consecutive pass-block snaps. His performance earned him first-team All-Pro honors in 2020 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2021.

Leadership and Influence

Joining the Chargers in 2021 with a five-year, $62.5 million contract, Linsley served as a team captain in each of his three seasons. His leadership and mentorship were highly valued by the team. Chargers president of football operations, John Spanos, praised Linsley: “Corey is everything you hope for and more in an NFL player. His mentorship of younger players, work ethic, integrity, leadership, competitive drive, and sense of humor all played a role in earning him the ‘C’ on his jersey throughout the entirety of his time with us.”

Community Impact

Beyond the field, Linsley and his wife, Anna, were passionate advocates for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). Their dedication to community service earned Linsley two nominations for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. Spanos added, “While he has taken his last snap in the NFL, Corey’s story is far from being written. We cannot wait to see what the next chapter has in store for the Linsleys.”

Career Overview

Drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Linsley started all 132 games he played with both the Packers and the Chargers. His career is highlighted by consistent performance, leadership, and significant contributions on and off the field.

As Linsley prepares for retirement, the NFL bids farewell to a player who has left an indelible mark on the game and his community.
