The recent arrest of Nigerian social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has sparked widespread confusion and concern. His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, reported that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has not provided a clear reason for VDM’s detention.
Lawyer’s Statement Raises Questions
After visiting VDM in custody, Adeyanju stated, “We still cannot understand why he was arrested. EFCC said there’s no petition against him after our repeated demand.” This assertion contradicts earlier reports suggesting multiple petitions led to VDM’s arrest.
EFCC’s Initial Justification
Initially, the EFCC claimed that VDM was arrested due to several petitions alleging cyberstalking and defamation. Spokesperson Dele Oyewale mentioned that the agency was acting on complaints from various individuals.
Public Outcry and Legal Concerns
The lack of transparency surrounding VDM’s arrest has led to public protests and legal scrutiny. The Public Interest Lawyers League (PILL) condemned the detention, citing it as a violation of constitutional rights. They emphasized that detaining an individual without formal charges breaches the Nigerian Constitution’s provisions.
Incident at GTBank
VDM’s arrest occurred at a GTBank branch in Abuja, where he was reportedly trapped inside the bank’s exit door for over five minutes, facilitating his apprehension by EFCC operatives. This incident has raised further questions about the methods employed during his arrest.
Awaiting Clarity
As of now, the EFCC has not provided concrete evidence or formal charges against VDM. The situation remains fluid, with legal representatives and the public seeking clarity on the reasons behind his detention.
