Nigerian comedian Bennett Chinedu Daniel, popularly known as Acapella, has revealed that he received multiple threats after defending claims that Lagos has sanitation issues. The controversy began when influencer Scott Iguma posted a viral video describing Lagos as “smelling” and plagued with “big mosquitoes.” In response, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, accused certain individuals, particularly migrants from other states, of deliberately tarnishing the city’s image through social media narratives.
Acapella’s Response
Acapella took to social media to criticize Commissioner Wahab’s remarks, accusing him of double standards and ethnic bias. He pointed out that the commissioner often remains silent when Lagos residents complain about issues like flooding or poor sanitation but becomes defensive when outsiders highlight the city’s problems.
Threats and Backlash
Following his comments, Acapella reported receiving several direct messages and phone calls containing threats. He expressed concern over the hostility, emphasizing that all Nigerians have equal rights to express their opinions about national issues. He stated, “No Nigerian is more Nigerian than any other Nigerian,” and urged citizens not to be discouraged from pointing out societal problems.
The Broader Implications
This incident highlights the challenges faced by individuals who speak out about societal issues in Nigeria. It raises questions about freedom of expression, ethnic sensitivities, and the importance of addressing environmental concerns in urban areas like Lagos.
