Colombian Presidential Hopeful Shot in the Head by 15-Year-Old Suspect

Prominent Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, a top contender for the 2026 presidential election, was shot three times, twice in the head and once in the leg, while addressing supporters at a campaign event in Bogotá on Saturday, June 7

 Chilling Scene at the Rally

As Uribe Turbay was greeting supporters in the Fontibón (Modelia) neighborhood, gunfire erupted from behind. Eyewitnesses describe the chaotic moment: he was struck and collapsed in a pool of blood, prompting bystanders to rush him to safety . Three others,a 20‑year-old man, a 36‑year-old woman, and another 15‑year-old,were also wounded

 Currently in Critical Condition

Following emergency neurosurgery conducted over night, the senator remains in intensive care in “grave condition”, with doctors describing his recovery as entering its “critical hours” .

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

A 15-year-old suspect wielding a Glock-style pistol was arrested at the scene. Authorities are still determining whether he acted alone or as part of a larger plot. Colombia’s Defense Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has launched a major investigation and offered a reward of 3 billion pesos (≈ $728,000) for information leading to those responsible

 Attacks on Democracy

President Gustavo Petro and leaders across the political spectrum have condemned the attack as a serious threat to democracy. Petro canceled a trip to France to oversee security efforts. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also voiced concern, linking the incident to increasing political tensions and inflammatory public rhetoric

 A Legacy Shaped by Violence

Miguel Uribe Turbay carries a heavy family legacy marked by tragedy. He is the grandson of former president Julio César Turbay Ayala and son of journalist Diana Turbay, who was kidnapped by Pablo Escobar’s cartel and killed in a failed rescue attempt in 1991. This assassination attempt marks yet another chapter in a long history of political violence impacting his family

 Implications for Colombia’s 2026 Elections

This shooting revives grim memories of political violence from the 1990s by FARC guerrillas and drug gangs, raising concerns about Colombia’s ability to safeguard its electoral process . As the nation heads toward elections in May 2026, this attack has intensified calls for stronger security measures and national unity

 Final Thoughts

The violent attack on Miguel Uribe Turbay is a chilling reminder of the risks facing public figures and the fragility of democratic norms in Colombia. With an official inquiry underway and support flowing in from around the world, all eyes turn to the injured senator’s recovery and the country’s response to this alarming act.
