China’s Huawei Launches New Software Brand For Intelligent Driving

Chinese tech juggernaut Huawei has made a significant stride towards shaping the future of electric vehicles (EVs) with the unveiling of its latest software brand for intelligent driving. Named Qiankun, which symbolizes a blend of heaven and the Kunlun Mountains, the new brand represents Huawei’s ambitious foray into the burgeoning EV industry, aiming to establish itself as a key player in the realm of intelligent mobility.

A Vision for the Future

Jin Yuzhi, CEO of Huawei’s Intelligent Automotive Solution (IAS) business unit, unveiled Qiankun during a prestigious event ahead of the Beijing auto show. He emphasized that 2024 would mark the commencement of mass commercialization for smart driving, with over 500,000 cars equipped with Huawei’s self-driving system anticipated to hit the roads by the year-end. Furthermore, Jin projected that within a year, more than 10 car models incorporating Huawei’s Qiankun system would be available in the market.

A Strategic Move

Huawei’s foray into the EV landscape began in 2019 when it launched its smart car unit, aspiring to become the Bosch equivalent of the intelligent EV era by providing software and components to industry partners. In November, the company announced the spin-off of its smart car unit into a new company, receiving core technologies and resources and securing investments from partners like automaker Changan Auto.

Strides in EV Collaboration

Huawei has collaborated with various Chinese automakers to unveil seven EV models, all of which are experiencing robust sales performance. These include models under partnerships with Seres, Chery, Avatr (backed by Changan Auto), and Arcfox (owned by BAIC). Notably, Huawei recently launched the S9 sedan, the inaugural model under its premium Stelato brand, in collaboration with BAIC.

Navigating a Competitive Landscape

Huawei’s pivot towards EVs comes amidst a fiercely competitive market, with over 40 brands vying for consumer attention in China. The move underscores the company’s strategic diversification in response to slowing sales momentum and overcapacity concerns in the auto market.

Adapting to Market Dynamics

In response to market dynamics, Huawei-backed Aito recently offered discounts of up to 20,000 yuan ($2,760) on its new M7 SUVs until the end of April, reflecting efforts to stay competitive in the ever-evolving EV landscape.

Huawei’s entry into the EV industry signals a seismic shift in the automotive landscape, with Qiankun poised to lead the charge towards intelligent mobility in China and beyond.
