CD Projekt Sets Sights on ‘Polaris’: Next Chapter in the Witcher Series Takes Shape

CD Projekt Plans Production Phase Launch for Highly Anticipated “Polaris” Trilogy

CD Projekt, the renowned Polish video game developer, is gearing up for a significant milestone in the gaming world. The company aims to kick off the production phase of its upcoming game series, “Polaris,” within the year, according to joint CEO Adam Badowski.

The Polaris Project: Expanding the Witcher Universe

“Polaris” represents a new trilogy that will expand the captivating universe of the blockbuster “Witcher” medieval fantasy franchise. With over 75 million copies sold since the debut of the first game in 2007, the Witcher series has garnered a massive and dedicated fanbase.

Adam Badowski, along with co-CEO Michal Nowakowski, envisions a team of around 400 people actively working on the project by the middle of the year. However, CD Projekt has not disclosed a specific premiere date for the first game in the “Polaris” series. Analysts speculate that the debut may occur in 2026 or 2027.

Post-Cyberpunk Focus: Shaping the Future of CD Projekt

After the challenging launch of “Cyberpunk 2077” in late 2020, marked by technical issues and bugs, CD Projekt has been on a transformative journey. The company has set its sights on organizational improvements, announcing plans for new games and revealing that Cyberpunk’s sales surpassed 25 million copies.

A sequel to “Cyberpunk,” codenamed “Orion,” is currently in the conceptual phase. Badowski disclosed that approximately 80 people are expected to be working on the project by the year’s end. While considering the inclusion of multiplayer elements, CD Projekt remains tight-lipped about specific details.

AI Integration and Studio Expansion

Addressing the company’s forward-looking initiatives, Nowakowski revealed CD Projekt’s exploration of AI applications in game production. The company has formed a dedicated team to explore how AI can enhance specific processes while emphasizing that it won’t replace human involvement.

Despite initial wage pressures, Nowakowski mentioned that the company anticipates hiring in its Polish studios to be relatively low. However, CD Projekt remains committed to expanding its North America studio, reflecting a strategic approach to talent acquisition.

Lessons Learned: Improved Production Control

Reflecting on the lessons learned from the Cyberpunk release, Badowski highlighted the company’s enhanced control over the game production process. He expressed confidence that future releases, including “Polaris,” would avoid challenges akin to those faced during the Cyberpunk 2077 premiere.

As CD Projekt embarks on this ambitious venture, gaming enthusiasts eagerly await the unfolding of the “Polaris” trilogy, anticipating another immersive experience in the Witcher universe.
