Cardinal Robert Prevost Elected Pope Leo XIV, First American to Lead Catholic Church!

In a historic and unprecedented moment for the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago has been elected as the 267th pope, taking the name Leo XIV. His election on May 8, 2025, marks the first time an American—and a North American—has ascended to the papacy, breaking a 2,000-year tradition of European pontiffs

The announcement came on the second day of the papal conclave, following the death of Pope Francis on April 21. White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel, signaling the successful election, and Cardinal Dominique Mamberti proclaimed the traditional “Habemus Papam” from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Leo XIV then appeared to greet the cheering crowds, offering his first words as pontiff: “Peace be with all of you!”

Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago to parents of French, Italian, and Spanish descent, Robert Francis Prevost joined the Order of St. Augustine and was ordained in 1982. He spent significant time in Peru, serving as a missionary, seminary teacher, and later as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a role that elevated his profile within the Vatican.

Known for his humility and dedication to social justice, Pope Leo XIV is fluent in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese. His multicultural background and extensive experience in Latin America have shaped his pastoral approach and commitment to inclusivity.

In his inaugural address, Pope Leo XIV emphasised themes of unity, peace, and dialogue, calling for a Church that “builds bridges and embraces all people.” He specifically greeted the people of Peru, reflecting his deep ties to the country where he served for many years.

His election has been met with widespread acclaim. President Donald Trump expressed national pride, calling the moment “a great honour for the U.S.” The swift conclave, concluding in just two days, underscores the unity among the 133 cardinal electors in choosing a leader poised to continue the Church’s mission in a rapidly changing world.

As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, the global Catholic community looks forward to his leadership, anticipating a continuation of the values of compassion, inclusivity, and engagement with contemporary issues that characterised his predecessor’s tenure.
