Breaking: Fire Guts Popular Mandilas Building in Lagos, No Casualties Yet

Lagos, Nigeria – A raging fire ravaged the iconic Mandilas Building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Sunday afternoon, destroying numerous shops and business offices. The cause of the inferno remains under investigation, but Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed it originated from the first floor.

Videos circulating online showed the five-story building engulfed in flames, with onlookers helplessly watching, hoping for emergency services to arrive soon. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported thus far.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly, and Governor Sanwo-Olu visited the scene to oversee the firefighting efforts. He assured the public that emergency responders would remain on-site until the fire is completely extinguished.

“I want to commend the efforts of our firefighters and emergency responders who are battling the fire bravely,” the Governor said in a statement. “Our focus right now is ensuring everyone’s safety and minimizing damage.”

The Mandilas Building, also known as Madras Plaza, houses a bustling marketplace and office complex. The extent of the damage remains unclear, but the fire is believed to have caused significant losses for many businesses.

This major fire incident highlights the need for stricter fire safety regulations and regular inspections of older buildings in Lagos. The authorities are urged to investigate the cause of the fire thoroughly and implement measures to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
