
Renowned Nigerian evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, has passed away at the age of 80. His family confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday, October 13, 2025, noting that he died on October 6, 2025.
Dr. Ukpai, a prominent figure in Pentecostal Christianity, dedicated over six decades to evangelism, dynamic teaching, and prophetic demonstrations of God’s power. His ministry impacted millions globally, transforming lives through his crusades and teachings. He was instrumental in founding the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and was a key leader in the movement.
Born on January 7, 1945, in Asaga, Ohafia, Abia State, Dr. Ukpai converted to Christianity in 1958. He pursued education in various fields, including journalism and divinity, earning degrees from institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1975, he married Philomena Uma Ukpai, a fellow pastor, and they had eight children and an adopted child. Tragically, they lost two children in a car accident on the same day.
Beyond his evangelistic efforts, Dr. Ukpai was involved in humanitarian work, including medical outreach programs through the Uma Ukpai Eye Centre and King of Kings Hospital in Abia State. He also established educational institutions such as the Uma Ukpai School of Theology and Biblical Studies and Uma Ukpai Polytechnic.
The family has expressed gratitude for his life and legacy, stating, “With hearts full of gratitude, we celebrate the triumphant homegoing of Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai… He was a spiritual general known for evangelism, a founding father of faith, loving husband, devoted father and mentor to many.”
