Mendy’s Financial Struggles Amid False Allegations
Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has opened up about the financial difficulties he faced during his court trial for false rape allegations. The French footballer revealed that, during this challenging period, he had to borrow money from his former teammates, including Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez, to cover his legal expenses and support his family.
Teammates Stepped In to Help
Mendy, who is now playing for FC Lorient in France, was accused of rape and sexual assault while still at Manchester City. As a result, the club suspended him without pay, leaving him to bear the financial burden of his legal defense. In his witness statement, Mendy expressed gratitude to Sterling, Silva, and Mahrez for their assistance during this difficult time.
“Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez all lent me money to help me try and pay my legal fees and support my family,” Mendy said.
Suspension and Legal Battle with Manchester City
While facing these allegations, Mendy’s contract with Manchester City came under strain. The club sought to terminate his contract, but the defender resisted, expressing his desire to return to training with his team. Mendy maintained that he was unjustly treated due to the false charges against him.
“I rejected all attempts by Manchester City to cancel my contract as I wanted to go back and train with my team,” Mendy stated.
Mendy Seeks Compensation for Unpaid Wages
Now cleared of all charges, Mendy has taken legal action against Manchester City, seeking a refund of the wages he would have earned had he not been falsely accused. In his court testimony, he emphasized the emotional and financial toll the situation took on him.
“I believe that it is fair and just for me to be paid the wages that I would have earned but for being falsely arrested for crimes that I did not commit,” Mendy added.
A Case of Perseverance and Support
Mendy’s revelations highlight the immense personal challenges he faced during his trial, from financial hardship to the emotional strain of fighting to clear his name. His story also sheds light on the unwavering support of his teammates, who stepped in to help him through one of the most difficult times of his life.
