Barcelona’s Ferran Torres Undergoes Emergency Appendicitis Surgery

FC Barcelona has announced that forward Ferran Torres underwent successful emergency surgery for appendicitis on the night of May 14, 2025. The procedure was carried out at the Hospital de Barcelona by Drs. Coroleu and Borràs, under the supervision of the club’s medical team.

A Sudden Setback for Torres

Torres had trained normally earlier that day and was expected to start in the upcoming Catalan derby against Espanyol. However, he began experiencing discomfort later in the afternoon, leading to medical tests that confirmed the need for immediate surgery.

Impact on Barcelona’s Season

This unexpected health issue means Torres will miss the remainder of Barcelona’s La Liga fixtures, including the crucial matches against Espanyol, Villarreal, and Athletic Club. His absence is a significant blow to the team, especially considering his pivotal role in the squad this season. Torres has contributed 19 goals and 7 assists in 45 appearances, including a standout performance in the recent Clásico against Real Madrid.

Uncertainty Surrounding National Team Participation

Looking ahead, Torres’ participation in Spain’s UEFA Nations League Final Four, scheduled from June 4 to 8 in Germany, is now in doubt. While recovery from appendicitis typically requires a few weeks, the exact timeline for Torres’ return to full fitness remains uncertain.

Barcelona’s Next Steps

With Torres sidelined, manager Hansi Flick faces a tactical challenge. Robert Lewandowski is expected to return to the starting lineup after recovering from a hamstring injury, potentially leading the attack in Torres’ absence. Alternatively, Dani Olmo may be utilized in a false nine role. Ferran Torres’ emergency surgery marks a significant disruption for both FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team. As he begins his recovery, the football community will be watching closely, hoping for his swift return to the pitch.
