Author Shot by Police After Backyard Standoff

Best-selling author Jillian Lauren has been shot by police and charged with attempted murder following a dramatic standoff at her Los Angeles home, which stemmed from a search for hit-and-run suspects.

The incident occurred Tuesday as police pursued three suspects allegedly involved in a car accident and subsequent hit-and-run. Lauren, 51, became involved when one of the suspects fled onto her street, which she shares with her husband, Weezer bassist Scott Shriner.

According to a statement from the LAPD, Lauren emerged from her house holding a weapon and refused to comply with officers’ numerous demands to drop it. She allegedly pointed the handgun at the officers, prompting them to shoot her in the shoulder.

The standoff took place in the backyard of her home in the Eagle Rock neighborhood in northeast Los Angeles. Local media reports indicate that Lauren fired at one of the hit-and-run suspects after they attempted to break into her property.

After being shot by police, Lauren ran back into her house, where she stayed for about 30 minutes before reappearing with her babysitter and surrendering to authorities.

Both Lauren and her babysitter were taken into custody, and Lauren was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a nearby hospital. A nine-millimeter handgun was recovered from her residence, and she was later charged with attempted murder.

Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol apprehended one of the hit-and-run suspects shortly after the incident. The suspect, found in the backyard of a house near Lauren’s, was reportedly wearing only boxer shorts and had been filmed by news helicopters attempting to blend into the neighborhood. He had jumped into a swimming pool and watered plants, presumably to avoid detection.

His identity has not been released, and the other two suspects remain at large.

Lauren, also known as Jillian Shriner, is a well-known author of two bestselling memoirs, including Some Girls: My Life in a Harem (2010), which recounts her time in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. In 2023, she published Behold the Monster: Facing America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer, based on interviews with serial killer Samuel Little, who confessed to 93 murders between 1970 and 2005.

Lauren married Shriner in 2005, two years before he joined the band Weezer, known for hits like Buddy Holly and Hash Pipe. The band, along with Ed Sheeran, were confirmed as last-minute additions to the lineup for California’s Coachella music festival, set to begin this Friday. It is unclear whether Lauren’s arrest will affect Shriner’s plans to perform at the event.
