The Anambra State Government has refuted claims that it plans to arrest women seen in public without bras or panties. A statement issued by Christian Aburime, the Press Secretary to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, described the reports as “false and malicious.” The government emphasized its commitment to protecting the fundamental human rights and dignity of all citizens, stating that while it encourages decent dressing, it does not interfere with individuals’ private choices regarding clothing or undergarments, as such matters are private and protected by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Clarification on Community Announcements
The controversy arose from announcements in various communities within Anambra State, where town criers reportedly stated that women who move about without underwear would be arrested. These announcements were linked to the state’s new security outfit, Operation Udo Ga-Achi (popularly known as Agụnechemba). The state government clarified that these announcements were neither from the state government nor the security outfit, labeling them as “untrue, mischievous, and an orchestrated story to mislead the public and tarnish the reputable image of the State.”
Government’s Focus on Critical Issues
The Anambra State Government emphasized that such trivial matters do not have any legal support and cannot be the focus of the state government or its law enforcement agencies. The government is focused on ridding the state of every form of criminality and urged the public to disregard any such distracting announcements.
Public Advisory
The government advised the public to disregard the “fake news” and to avoid spreading such misinformation, which could cause unnecessary panic. It reiterated its commitment to focusing on critical issues such as security, human capital development, and economic transformation.
