The newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Olatunji Owoade, has firmly stated that he had no prior connections with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde or former Senator Monsurat Sunmonu before ascending the throne as the 46th Alaafin.
Speaking during a Thanksgiving service on Sunday at the Anglican Cathedral Church in Oyo Town, the monarch made it clear that his rise to the throne was purely a divine occurrence and not influenced by political ties.
“I never knew nor met both the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu before or during the process leading to the throne,” Oba Owoade emphasized. “I never anticipated becoming the Alaafin of Oyo. I wasn’t desperate nor did I cut corners to secure the position—it was purely the will of God.”
This statement was shared through a press release issued by the monarch’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, in Ibadan, the state capital, on Monday.
In his address, Oba Owoade highlighted the importance of unity, saying, “Let us remember that united we stand, and divided we fall. In unity lies our strength, and with collective harmony, we will overcome the challenges ahead without bickering or discord.”
The new Alaafin pledged to uphold ethical leadership, promote open dialogue, and foster a safe, inclusive environment for the people of Oyo.
