Senate President Godswill Akpabio has petitioned the Federal High Court in Abuja to compel suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to remove a satirical apology she posted on her social media platforms. The apology, shared on April 27, mocked Akpabio’s leadership style in the Senate.
Background of the Dispute
The controversy began when Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment in December 2023. In response, Akpabio’s media aide allegedly made defamatory statements about Akpoti-Uduaghan, leading her to file a defamation suit seeking ₦100 billion in damages. Subsequently, she was suspended from the Senate for six months for alleged misconduct.
Court’s Previous Orders
On April 4, 2025, Justice Binta Nyako issued an order barring both parties from making public comments or engaging in media interviews related to the case. Despite this, Akpoti-Uduaghan posted the satirical apology on her official Facebook page, prompting Akpabio’s legal team to seek enforcement of the court’s directive.
Legal Actions Taken
Akpabio’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Kehinde Ogunwumiju, has filed a motion requesting the court to
Compel Akpoti-Uduaghan to delete the satirical apology from all her social media platforms.
Issue a written apology to Akpabio, to be published in at least two national newspapers.
Submit an affidavit confirming compliance with these directives
The court is expected to hear the motion on May 12, 2025.
