Ahmed Musa Returns, Victor Osimhen Left Out as Eric Chelle Names 26-Man Squad for Unity Cup

Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have unveiled their 26-man squad for the upcoming Unity Cup in London. The tournament, scheduled from May 26 to 31 at Brentford FC’s Gtech Community Stadium, features Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Ahmed Musa Returns as Captain

Veteran forward Ahmed Musa makes a notable return to the squad, reclaiming the captain’s armband. Musa, who plays for Kano Pillars in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), last featured for the Super Eagles in January 2024.

Key Absences: Osimhen and Other European Stars

Notably absent from the squad are several European-based regulars, including Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Calvin Bassey, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi. These players have been rested ahead of upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Emphasis on Home-Based Talent

The squad features nine players from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), providing them an opportunity to showcase their skills on the international stage. This move reflects Coach Eric Chelle’s strategy to blend experienced players with emerging local talent.

Upcoming Fixtures

Nigeria will face Ghana on May 28 in their opening match of the Unity Cup. Following the tournament, the Super Eagles are scheduled to play a friendly match against Russia on June 6 in Moscow. For this fixture, several top stars, including Victor Boniface, Ola Aina, and William Troost-Ekong, are expected to rejoin the squad.
