A court has granted Abba Kyari a two-week bail to attend his mother’s burial. This decision comes ahead of the court’s scheduled ruling on his bail application set for Friday, May 31. Kyari faces trial on drug-related charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following his arrest over two years ago on February 14, 2022.
Mother’s Passing and Burial
Kyari’s mother passed away in the early hours of Sunday, May 5, 2024. She was survived by ten children, including Abba, who is the eldest son. Despite being granted bail, Kyari was unable to attend the burial. However, residents of Borno State gathered in large numbers to pay their respects to Yachilla, who was buried according to Islamic rites on the same day.
Suspension and Allegations
In 2022, the Police Service Commission (PSC) suspended Kyari and two other senior police officers, Sunday Ubua and James Bawa. The suspension was due to their alleged involvement in a cocaine deal. The PSC’s statement highlighted that, effective from February 14, 2022, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sunday Ubua and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) James Bawa were suspended from their duties.
NDLEA’s Case Against Kyari
The NDLEA had declared Kyari wanted due to alleged connections with an international drug cartel. Femi Babalola, the NDLEA spokesperson, accused Kyari and his Intelligence Response Team of arresting drug traffickers from Ethiopia with 25kg of cocaine but appropriating 15kg of the seized substance for themselves.
