A Life Of Grace And Legacy: The Remarkable Journey Of Mrs. Madam Atim Asuquo Ekanem (1927–2025)

Preamble

“For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:14

With hearts full of gratitude and reverence, we celebrate the glorious life and peaceful transition of our beloved matriarch, Mrs. Madam Atim Asuquo Ekanem, who rested in the Lord on 18th February 2025, at the age of 97. We firmly believe she fulfilled her divine number of years on earth and are eternally thankful to God for the privilege of sharing life with such a rare gem. Her legacy of faith, grace, discipline, and devotion will forever remain etched in our hearts.

Birth and Parentage

Mrs. Madam Atim Asuquo Ekanem, née Atim Jack Ikpeme, was born on 27th August 1927 in Okpo, Eniong Abatim, in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. She was the daughter of Obong Jack Ikpeme of the Ikpeme Akamba Royal Family, and Madam Ekatte Nta Amaku of the Royal Family of Amaku Obiom, both from Okpo.

She was the first female and the last-born in a family of seven children. Tragically, she became the only surviving child, as six of her brothers were lost during the Biafran War that invaded Eniong community. A child of great beauty, wisdom, and wit, she experienced early loss when her father passed away. When the war broke out, her mother relocated with her to Akpa Utong in Ibiono near Itu for safety.

Early Life and Education

At just seven years old, young Atim left her mother’s care to live with her maternal nieces, Mma Eyo and Mrs. Ekpenyong, who resided in Itu. She was enrolled at the Primary School in Itu Hill and later admitted to the Girls’ Civic Vocational Centre at Ikot Obong, now known as the Mary Slessor Presbyterian Secondary School, Ikot Obong, in present-day Ibiono Ibom.

Her education paved the way for a distinguished career in teaching. In 1970, she formally began her journey in the profession by enrolling in the Grade 3 Teachers’ Training Course at Teachers’ Training College, Ididep. Committed to excellence, she furthered her studies at Teachers’ Training College, Ikot Obio Obong, where she sat for the Grade II Teachers’ Certificate Examination in 1975 and was duly certified.

Marital Life

As she matured, Timma, as she was fondly called, blossomed into a graceful, striking, and God-fearing woman. She caught the admiration of many, yet her heart was drawn to a humble, intelligent, and devout young man—Mr. Asuquo Akpan Ekanem, from the Nung Ekpenyong Royal Family, son of Late Chief Akpan Ekanem Udofia of Ikpa Iboku-Obio Mkpe in Odiok Itam.

Their union was a perfect blend of love, mutual respect, and spiritual alignment. Together, they built a home founded on godliness, discipline, and a commitment to education and service.

Social Life and Community Influence

Mrs. Madam Atim Asuquo Ekanem, popularly known in the community as “Mma Teacher Ekanem”, was a beacon of light to all who encountered her. She was sociable, elegant, and filled with wisdom. Her heart was always open—she was a cheerful giver, a helper of many, and a motivator to the younger generation. Her warmth and compassion endeared her to the community, and her advice was often sought on matters of family, faith, and leadership.

Christian Life and Devotion

Born into the Church of Christ, her spiritual journey deepened upon marriage as she joined her husband in the Presbyterian Church, where she was confirmed and served faithfully until her last breath. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she often quoted scripture to remind those around her of the importance of numbering their days and applying their hearts to wisdom (Psalm 90:12).

She was known to sing hymns joyfully, participate in church activities, and remain prayerful in all things. Her walk with God was consistent, reflective, and inspiring.

Peaceful Transition to Glory

On 18th February 2025, Mrs. Madam Atim Asuquo Ekanem passed away peacefully in her sleep after a brief illness. True to her lifelong character, she remained calm, gracious, and spiritually prepared in her final days. Her passing marks the end of a significant era, but also the continuation of a legacy that will influence generations.

Legacy and Survivors

She is survived by her beloved children, sons and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives, friends, mentees, and spiritual children. Her life was a living testimony of Proverbs 31—a woman who feared the Lord and was richly praised.

Her memory will remain a guiding light to all who were privileged to know her, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.

Final Words

As we bid farewell to our dearly beloved matriarch, we celebrate a life well lived. She fought the good fight, kept the faith, and finished her race with honor. We take comfort in knowing that she now rests in eternal peace, embraced by her Maker.

Rest well, Mma. Your memory will forever remain a blessing.
