The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the suspension of several senior officers allegedly involved in a bribery scandal linked to Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky. The development comes as part of ongoing efforts to address corruption within the service.
Details of the Suspension
The Civil Defence, Correctional Fire, and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) had announced the suspension of four officers, including Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Michael Anugwa, who served as the officer in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kirikiri, Lagos. The officers were suspended for their alleged involvement in corruption-related misconduct to allow for a thorough investigation.
House of Representatives Investigation
During a House of Representatives investigation panel held on Monday, September 30, Anugwa appeared on behalf of the correctional service. He revealed to lawmakers that despite the CDCFIB’s directive, he had not received a formal suspension letter. Anugwa’s claim raised concerns, as he oversees the correctional center where Bobrisky served time.
Correctional Service’s Response
Following Anugwa’s testimony, the Nigerian Correctional Service released a statement signed by Assistant Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, late Monday night. The statement clarified that the service viewed Anugwa’s denial as a serious misconduct aimed at misleading the public. It reaffirmed that not only Anugwa but three other officers were also suspended for their alleged roles in various corruption-related activities.
List of Suspended Officers
The suspended officers include:
- DCC Sikiru Adekunle, officer in charge of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos
- DCC Michael Anugwa, officer in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos
- DCC Kevin Ikechukwu Iloafonsi, officer in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, FCT
- Assistant Superintendent of Corrections (ASC II) Ogbule Samuel Obinna of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi state
Official Suspension Details
The statement disclosed that the suspension of the officers took effect from September 26, 2024. The service also confirmed that two suspension letters, referenced CDCFIB/NCOS/DISP/016/VOL.II/16 and CDCFIB/NCOS/DISP/016/VOL.II/17, were issued to the affected officers on that date.
Commitment to Thorough Investigation
The Nigerian Correctional Service emphasized that it is committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the allegations. The public was assured that anyone found culpable would face punishment according to the Public Service Rules and other applicable laws. The service urged the public to remain patient and trust that justice would be served in due course.
