Tragic Incident at Ibadan Church: Five Dead After ‘Love Feast’

A tragic incident unfolded in Ibadan, Oyo State, as five people lost their lives after consuming a meal during a ‘Love Feast,’ known locally as Ipese, at the Celestial Church of Christ, Apata Iye Parish. The incident, which occurred on a Sunday within the church premises in the Apata area of Ido Local Government, has raised concerns and prompted investigations by various authorities.

Mysterious Deaths Spark Concern

The victims were among many who attended the church’s Love Feast, an event typically aimed at fostering unity and fellowship among congregants. Following the feast, several attendees fell ill, and five individuals passed away. Many others were rushed to the Infectious Disease Centre in Olodo, Egbeda Local Government Area, for urgent medical attention.

Unclear Cause of Death

While speculation has grown around the possibility of food poisoning from the meal served during the feast, there has been no official confirmation linking the deaths to the Ipese meal. A source from the church, who requested anonymity, claimed that he ate the same beans as the victims but remained unharmed.

“It’s not clear that the incident is related to the Ipese, as some people are claiming. Various government agencies, including the police, DSS, media outlets, and even the World Health Organization (WHO), have been investigating, but no public findings have been released,” he said.

Medical Response and Recovery

As part of the emergency response, dozens of affected worshippers were transported to the Infectious Disease Centre, where they received treatment. According to an anonymous staff member at the center, 50 of the victims have been treated and discharged, while others continue to receive care.

“Some of the affected people were brought here for treatment. So far, 50 have been discharged, while others are still receiving care,” the staff member said.

Police Investigation Underway

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the incident, with Adewale Osifeso, the police spokesperson, stating that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the deaths. Authorities are working closely with health officials to unravel the mystery surrounding the tragic deaths.

Church Leader’s Response

The church leader, Prophet Akin Kilanko, addressed the media and denied claims that the incident was connected to any ritual practice. In an interview with a local radio station, he insisted that the deaths were the result of a cholera outbreak, distancing the tragedy from the Ipese meal or any suspected food poisoning.

Awaiting Official Findings

As the investigation progresses, the community is awaiting official findings from health and law enforcement agencies to determine the root cause of this tragic event. The incident has not only shaken the church but also raised broader concerns about public health and food safety.
