Famous relationship expert, Blessing Okoro, popularly known as Blessing CEO, opened up about her experience during her brief stint in prison. In a recent interview, Blessing shared the highs and lows of life behind bars, painting a vivid picture of what it’s like to survive in the Nigerian prison system.
Background
In March 2023, Blessing CEO was incarcerated following accusations of cyber-bullying linked to her involvement in the controversial case of Lagos celebrity auto dealer, Ikechukwu Ogbonna (IVD), and his late wife, Bimbo Ogbonna. She was granted her freedom in April 2023, just a month after being remanded.
First Day in Prison
Blessing described her first day in prison as “traumatic.” Upon arrival, she was stripped of personal belongings, including her phone and wig, and subjected to a thorough search. She was then thrown into a bedbug-infested room where she spent her first night with two other women. Reflecting on this, Blessing admitted that the experience was shocking, but she adapted quickly.
Life in Prison: Boarding School Vibes
According to Blessing, life in prison is surprisingly similar to a boarding school, where one can make their stay as comfortable as possible—if they have the means. Prisoners, she said, have access to general prison food but can also purchase more luxurious meals at a higher price from restaurants within the facility. She noted that the prison even had a phone booth where inmates could call their loved ones, though mobile phones were officially considered contraband.
The Incident with Instagram Post
One of the more notable parts of her story involved how she was able to upload a photo on Instagram while still in custody. Blessing revealed that phones are not allowed in prison, but inmates often manage to sneak them in. On one occasion, she asked a warden for her phone to make a bank transfer, and after completing the transaction, she quickly posted a photo on Instagram. The post stirred controversy online, with many speculating that she wasn’t actually in prison.
This action triggered a search by the prison wardens, who believed she still had a phone in her possession. “They didn’t know I just posted and dropped the phone,” Blessing explained. Despite the commotion, she was not found with any contraband.
A Comfortable Stay
Despite the harsh conditions on her first night, Blessing admitted that things became more bearable once she settled into the system. She stated that, contrary to popular belief, inmates could make their stay relatively comfortable if they had the resources to do so. From food options to access to communication, Blessing emphasized that the right connections and money could transform life behind bars.
Future Plans
Blessing CEO’s prison experience offers a glimpse into the complexities of the Nigerian correctional system, where money and influence can significantly alter one’s prison life. While the experience was initially traumatic, she managed to live comfortably and even maintain her presence online, albeit discreetly.
