Female Army Private Calls on Nigerian Army to Publish Investigation Details After Dismissal Over S3xual Harassment Allegations

Private Ruth Ogunleye, a former Nigerian Army soldier, has publicly requested that the Nigerian Army release the full details of the investigation that led to her dismissal. Ogunleye was discharged following allegations of s3xual harassment she made against several senior officers, including Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem, Colonel G.S. Ogor, and Brigadier General I.B. Solebo.

Allegations and Events Leading to Dismissal

In January 2024, Ogunleye took to social media via her TikTok account to accuse the officers of repeated harassment. She alleged that Colonel Abdulkareem attempted to assault her and even forcibly removed her from her residence, administered injections without her consent, and confined her to a psychiatric hospital when she refused his advances.

The Nigerian Army launched an internal investigation in response to these accusations. On September 24, 2024, the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, announced that the evidence reviewed did not support Ogunleye’s claims. He further stated that medical reports from the National Hospital in Abuja indicated that Ogunleye had a medical condition that rendered her vulnerable.

Ogunleye’s Response and Call for Transparency

Following her dismissal on June 15, 2024, Private Ogunleye posted a TikTok video in which she expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army but demanded transparency. She urged the military authorities to publish the findings of the investigation that led to her discharge, insisting that the public deserves to know the truth.

In her statement, she reiterated the allegations made in January and called on the Army to release the investigation results via its official social media platforms. Ogunleye also expressed surprise that her dismissal was attributed to a mental health condition, asking how the situation evolved into a medical discharge.

Appeal to the Minister of Women Affairs

Ogunleye further addressed the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy, who had previously encouraged her to resign. Ogunleye claimed that she submitted a handwritten voluntary resignation letter at the minister’s request and that it was passed on to the Army. She called on the minister to clarify her involvement and questioned the basis for the Army converting her voluntary resignation to a medical discharge.

In her appeal, Ogunleye sought answers to the claims of mental illness and requested transparency regarding the discharge process, asserting that the investigation and its findings should be fully disclosed to the public.

General Influence

Private Ruth Ogunleye’s demand for transparency has reignited discussions about accountability and the handling of harassment allegations within the Nigerian Army. Her case also highlights broader concerns about the treatment of female soldiers and the processes involved in handling internal investigations.
