FG Increases NYSC Members’ Allowance to N77,000

The Federal Government has announced a significant increase in the monthly allowance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. The new allowance, effective from July 2024, sees corps members receiving ₦77,000 per month, a substantial jump from the previous ₦33,000.

Announcement of the New Allowance

The increment was made public on Wednesday, September 25, through an official statement posted by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on its Facebook page. The statement detailed that the new allowance is a direct result of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. The announcement was further confirmed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.

Role of NYSC Leadership in the Increment

The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, played a pivotal role in advocating for this increase. During his advocacy visit to the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, General Ahmed called for a more robust welfare package for corps members, underlining the importance of improved support for their service to the nation.

Impact on Corps Members

This increase is expected to bring immense relief to NYSC members, many of whom rely on the allowance for their upkeep during the one-year mandatory service. In addition to the financial benefits, the increment is anticipated to boost the morale of corps members, encouraging them to further contribute to national development through their various assignments.

Government’s Commitment to Youth Welfare

The Federal Government’s decision to increase the allowance underscores its commitment to the welfare of young Nigerians. By aligning the new allowance with the amended national minimum wage, the government is taking steps to ensure that corps members are adequately supported during their service year. This move reflects a broader agenda to improve living standards and economic security for Nigerian youths.

General Impact

The increment of the NYSC monthly allowance to ₦77,000 is a welcome development that will undoubtedly enhance the experiences of corps members. It is a clear indication of the government’s efforts to prioritize youth welfare and promote national service as an honorable and rewarding endeavor.
