The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the Edo State governorship election. The election, held on Saturday, September 21, saw a competitive race between the major political parties.
Okpebholo’s Victory
INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof Faruk Kuta, who is the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, made the announcement after tallying the results. According to Kuta, Okpebholo secured a total of 291,667 votes, emerging as the winner of the election. His closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 247,274 votes, while Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) received 22,763 votes, placing third.
The Competition
In addition to the three frontrunners, fourteen other candidates also vied for the governorship seat but garnered significantly fewer votes, failing to make a substantial impact on the outcome of the election. The strong competition between the APC, PDP, and LP, however, underscored the high level of interest and engagement from the people of Edo State in the electoral process.
INEC’s Statement
Prof Faruk Kuta confirmed that Monday Okpebholo met all the legal requirements to be declared the winner. He stated, “That Okpebholo Monday of APC having satisfied the requirement of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.” This formal declaration concludes the election process and marks the beginning of Okpebholo’s tenure as the governor-elect of Edo State.
Implications of the Election
The result is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape of Edo State, as the APC gains control of the state’s executive branch. With Okpebholo at the helm, the people of Edo will now look forward to the governance and policies he will implement in the coming years.
New Phase In Edo
The Edo governorship election was a highly competitive affair, with the APC’s Monday Okpebholo emerging victorious. As Edo State prepares for a new chapter under his leadership, all eyes are on how his administration will address the needs of the people and fulfill campaign promises.
