Mortuary Attendants Arrested for Selling Human Parts in Osun

Two mortuary attendants in Osun State have been arrested for allegedly selling human body parts and water used in bathing corpses to suspected ritualists. The Osun State Police Command, through its Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Giwa-Alade Emmanuel, made this disclosure during a press briefing held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the police headquarters in Osogbo.

Details of the Arrest

The suspects, identified as Johnson Daniel (43) and Adetunji Okunade (42), were apprehended after a tip-off from a concerned citizen. The police revealed that the attendants were involved in selling portions of human remains to local native doctors for ritual purposes. Alongside the attendants, five suspected ritualists—Olaniyan Azeez, Balogun Temitope Asimiyu, Oladapo Hammed, Kazeem Rasak, and Asaka Rauf—were also arrested in connection with the crime.

How the Crime Was Uncovered

According to Giwa-Alade Emmanuel, investigations were initiated after receiving credible information from a whistleblower. It was discovered that Johnson Daniel, a mortuary worker at Ipetu-Ijesa, had been conspiring with Adetunji Okunade to sell human remains and “corpse water” (water used in bathing corpses) to native doctors. This illegal activity was reportedly a routine for the two suspects, targeting ritualists who sought human body parts for their rituals.

Items Recovered from Suspects

During the investigation, a search of the suspects’ homes yielded disturbing items. Police found human bone fragments at the residences of Asaka Rauf and Oladapo Hammed. At the home of Balogun Temitope Asimiyu, officers recovered a female undergarment and a notebook containing ritual instructions. These items were believed to be used in ritual practices.

Court Proceedings and Legal Action

All the suspects, including the mortuary attendants and the suspected ritualists, have been charged in court. The police have pledged to ensure that justice is served in the matter. Emmanuel further explained that the remains obtained from the mortuary were used for various ritual purposes, as confessed by the primary suspects.

Additional Arrests in Armed Robbery Case

In a separate development, the Osun State Police also paraded five other suspects for alleged involvement in armed robbery. The suspects—Taiwo Adekunle, Adebayo Opeyemi, Hasan Ibrahim, Oba Wasiu, and Olajide Oladapo—were apprehended with several items, including a Ford Jeep, a Hunter motorcycle, an empty shell cartridge, an iPhone, and a magnet.

Ongoing Investigation

The Osun State Police assured the public that investigations into both the ritualistic activities and the armed robbery case are ongoing. They also encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities.
