Russian Railways Challenges Allegro Train Seizure by Finland

In a recent development, Russian Railways condemned Finland’s state-owned railway company, VR, for what it deems an unlawful seizure of four Allegro trains co-owned through a joint venture. The trains, known as Sm6, were a crucial link between the two countries until passenger services were suspended in March 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russian Railways claims that the transfer of the trains was not agreed upon and accuses VR of neglecting financial obligations towards the joint venture, leading to insolvency. Despite proposals to resume operations, VR’s alleged failure to accept them has resulted in lost income and an inability to fulfill obligations. The Allegro trains, consisting of seven carriages each, are now set to be repurposed for domestic long-distance travel in Finland from 2025.
