A tragic incident in Anambra State has sparked widespread outrage as a pastor, identified as Elijah Emeka Ibeabuchi, has been accused of murdering his wife, Ogechukwu Okafor. The alleged murder occurred on August 13, 2024, but it was not until early September that the case gained public attention. According to Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Ify Obinabo, the family of the deceased raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding Ogechukwu’s death. Initially, Elijah Ibeabuchi had claimed that his wife fell from a four-story building, resulting in her death. However, upon further investigation, it was discovered that Ogechukwu’s body bore stab wounds to her neck and chest, contradicting her husband’s account.
Family’s Allegations
The deceased’s uncle, Mr. Samuel Onuorah, who hails from Abatete, recounted the events that led to the discovery of the true cause of death. After being informed by his late niece’s husband that she had fallen from a building, Mr. Onuorah and other family members grew suspicious. Their suspicions were confirmed when they visited the mortuary where Ogechukwu’s body had been deposited. There, they found stab wounds on her body, indicating that she had been attacked, rather than falling to her death as previously claimed.
The family also raised additional allegations, accusing Pastor Ibeabuchi of intending to use their newborn baby for ritual purposes. In their account, the pastor allegedly attacked his wife while she was holding the baby, leading to a struggle during which he stabbed her and even scraped her palm in the process. These details have intensified the family’s call for justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ogechukwu’s death.
Calls for Justice
In response to the incident, the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, led by Hon. Ify Obinabo, has pledged to ensure that justice is served. The commissioner has called on various stakeholders, women’s groups, human rights activists, and social media users to lend their voices to the case, urging them to support the government’s efforts to bring justice for Ogechukwu. Hon. Obinabo further assured the public that she would involve the wife of the governor to ensure that the investigation receives the attention it deserves.
