Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, has reiterated his call for greater transparency and accountability in government finances, particularly in relation to the removal of Nigeria’s fuel subsidy. In a recent interview with News Central, Obi stressed the importance of showing Nigerians how the funds saved from subsidy removal are being allocated and ensuring that these allocations can be tracked effectively.
The Fuel Subsidy Debate
Fuel subsidy has long been a contentious issue in Nigeria. For years, the Nigerian government subsidized the cost of fuel, keeping prices lower for consumers. However, in June 2023, the subsidy was removed, leading to a sharp rise in fuel prices and widespread public debate. The removal of the subsidy was seen as a necessary step to reduce the financial burden on the government, but many Nigerians have since struggled with the increased cost of living.
Obi’s Call for Transparency
Peter Obi, a vocal critic of government inefficiencies, questioned the federal government’s transparency in handling the aftermath of subsidy removal. He argued that Nigerians deserve to know how the funds previously allocated to the subsidy are being redirected. According to Obi, if the subsidy has truly been removed, the government must clearly outline the projects and sectors where these savings are being invested. This would allow the public to monitor and hold the government accountable for its spending decisions.
“Where is the money going?” Obi asked, emphasizing that transparency is key in a democratic system. He noted that while the fuel subsidy has been eliminated, the country’s debt continues to rise, and the cost of living has increased for ordinary citizens. He argued that if the funds saved from removing the subsidy are not being channeled into tangible, trackable projects, Nigerians have every right to question the effectiveness of the policy.
Rising Debt and Economic Concerns
Obi also raised concerns about Nigeria’s growing debt profile, even after subsidy removal. As of 2024, Nigeria’s debt continues to climb, raising questions about the effectiveness of the government’s financial management. Obi highlighted that despite the removal of subsidies, many Nigerians are still grappling with inflation, high fuel prices, and an overall increase in the cost of essential goods and services. He warned that without a clear plan for addressing these economic issues, the situation could worsen for the average Nigerian.
Obi’s Advocacy for Democratic Processes
Peter Obi is not only focused on fiscal transparency but also on the preservation of democracy in Nigeria. In his interview, he underscored the importance of biometric systems to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and urged for more stringent scrutiny of the country’s borrowing and spending patterns. Obi stressed the need to prioritize sectors that are critical to national development, such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Obi also addressed the concerns about Nigeria’s electoral system, advocating for the strengthening of democratic institutions to ensure that citizens’ votes are accurately represented. He emphasized that democracy thrives on accountability, and the public should have access to information on how their country’s resources are managed.
Not Focused on Future Elections
While Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign gained significant support, he made it clear that his current focus is on the present struggles of Nigerians, not on positioning himself for future elections. Responding to remarks by Rabiu Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, who expressed optimism about winning the 2027 election, Obi said that his priority remains addressing the immediate needs of Nigerians.
He downplayed suggestions that he is “desperate” for the presidency, noting that his primary concern is to see Nigeria improve under its current leadership, regardless of who holds office.
Addressing #EndBadGovernance Protests
In the same interview, Peter Obi expressed strong support for citizens’ right to peaceful protest, referencing the #EndBadGovernance movement that has gained momentum in Nigeria. Obi condemned the prosecution of protesters, advocating instead for dialogue between the government and its citizens. He argued that peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right, and that governments should engage with protesters to understand their grievances rather than resorting to punitive measures.
Recalling his tenure as Governor of Anambra State, Obi shared how he managed similar situations by engaging directly with protesters when they temporarily shut down government offices. He urged the federal government to take a similar approach, emphasizing the importance of listening to the people in a democracy.
