Nigerian Government Distances Itself from Purported Same-Sex Marriage School Debate

The Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria has publicly disassociated itself from a controversial school debate allegedly organized by the Creative Africa Initiative, titled “Same-Sex Marriage Should be Legalised in Nigeria.” The debate, which sparked significant public concern, was falsely associated with the Ministry through the use of a forged letterhead.

Ministry’s Response to Forged Document

In an official statement released on Saturday, August 10, 2024, Folasade Boriowo, the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, clarified that the Ministry had no involvement with the debate. Boriowo emphasized that the letterhead used by the organization was forged, featuring outdated reference numbers and an obsolete department name, which has not existed since June 2021.

“The letter in question features a reference number linked to the now-defunct Basic and Secondary Education Department, which ceased to exist since June 17, 2021,” the statement read. The Ministry also noted discrepancies in the font and layout of the forged document, further indicating its fraudulent nature.

Concerns Over the Debate Topic

The proposed debate topic, advocating for the legalization of same-sex marriage in Nigeria, is particularly sensitive and contentious within the country, where such issues are highly polarizing. The Ministry’s statement highlighted that the debate topic is “contrary to the cultural and religious values upheld by the majority of Nigerians, as well as to extant Nigerian laws.” There were concerns that such a debate could disrupt public peace and societal norms, potentially leading to unnecessary tension and division within the community.

Official Clarifications

The Ministry also clarified that the 2024 debate calendar, overseen by the Senior Secondary Education Department, does not align with the content or scheduling mentioned in the forged letter. The letter incorrectly referenced an event set for April 2025, which is not part of the Ministry’s official plans.

In light of these revelations, the Ministry urged all stakeholders, including educational institutions and the general public, to disregard the fake communication. They also advised the public to rely only on official announcements from the Ministry regarding future debates and educational initiatives.

Conclusion

The Federal Ministry of Education’s prompt response to this forgery serves as a caution against misinformation and the unauthorized use of official government documents. It also underscores the sensitivity of certain topics within Nigeria’s socio-cultural and legal context. The Ministry remains committed to promoting educational initiatives that align with the nation’s values and legal framework.
