On Wednesday morning, protesters stormed the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos as Nigeria marks the 2024 Democracy Day. Despite the heavy security presence, the demonstrators gathered in significant numbers, chanting solidarity songs and holding placards and banners.

The area saw a robust deployment of security forces, including policemen and officials from the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps. These officers were strategically stationed at the venue to maintain order.
Protesters’ Demands
The protesters carried various placards with inscriptions such as: “President Tinubu, let the poor breathe,” “For another general strike with mass protest now,” and “Payment of living wage to all Nigerian workers now.” Their chants and signs highlighted the pressing issues of rising hunger and economic hardship in the country.
Civil Society Groups Lead the Charge
Several civil society groups, including the Take It Back Movement, the Education Rights Campaign, the Coalition for Revolution, and the Socialist Workers League, spearheaded the protest. These groups have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the current administration’s policies and the growing poverty among Nigerians.
EndHunger Protest Begins
The protest, tagged #EndHunger, focused on the increasing hunger in the country. Activists gathered at the Ikeja Underbridge, carrying banners with messages such as “This hunger is too much,” “President Tinubu, let the poor breathe,” and “Reverse anti-people policies.”
Authorities’ Warning
The protest coincides with the national Democracy Day celebration. On Tuesday, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police issued warnings to those planning to stage protests across the country, urging them to desist from such actions.
Despite these warnings, the protest in Ikeja proceeded, reflecting the growing discontent among citizens regarding the economic conditions in Nigeria.
