Tragic Fire Claims Over 35 Lives in Kuwaiti City of Mangaf

A devastating fire has claimed the lives of at least 35 people in a residential building in Mangaf, Kuwait, according to the interior ministry. The blaze, which erupted at around 06:00 local time (03:00 GMT) on Wednesday, sent flames engulfing the lower part of the building while thick black smoke billowed from the upper floors, as shown in videos shared on social media.

Casualties and Injuries

Officials have reported that at least 15 other individuals were injured and subsequently taken to the hospital. Many of the casualties are believed to be foreign workers residing in the building.

Rescue Efforts and Control Measures

Maj-Gen Eid al-Oweihan, speaking to state TV, confirmed that the fire is now under control, but rescue operations are still ongoing. Despite the efforts, numerous fatalities occurred due to smoke inhalation.

Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf al-Sabah, visiting the scene, criticized real estate owners for violations and “greed.” Local media have suggested that the building might have been overcrowded, a situation often highlighted by officials as a significant risk in such accommodations.

Official Statements

A senior police officer informed state TV that a “large number” of people were present in the building at the time of the fire. While dozens were rescued, the high number of deaths was attributed to smoke inhalation. The officer emphasized that warnings about overcrowding in similar accommodations are frequently issued.

Workers’ Backgrounds

As of now, no specific details have been released regarding the countries of origin or the employment nature of the foreign workers affected by the tragedy. Further investigations and reports are expected to provide more information in the coming days.
